A Proposition

Since this is no longer connected with Scratch, I propose that we get rid of the "on-topic" requirement for posts. Misc. is about just hanging out and discussing things and if a certain discussion topic strays from the original post's topic, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. And likely, it won't really disrupt flow of conversation because typically, any particular topic will slowly veer "off-topic". But just because it's off-topic, doesn't mean that it's not worthwhile. It's just how like in real life people typically don't talk about the same thing for hours and hours: instead, they let the conversation ebb and flow and one topic will usually lead to another.

I think this will make the forums far more interesting and foster greater discussion.

Of course, getting rid of this doesn't mean I'm advocating for allowing spam or posts with no purpose whatsoever. Obviously, I think we should continue the current policy on those types of posts.

Re: A Proposition

Hm, I like where you're coming from, and I'll have to discuss this with April and Justin.

Do you plan on updating a ceiling fan in your home? What goals have you accomplished so far in 2012?

Re: A Proposition

I'll put in my input. If I'm looking through the forums, and I see a post called "What's Your Favorite Movie", and the topic ends up moving on to talking about baseball, I think that would cause a few problems. For one, are people allowed to post about movies anymore? If so, it'd get really confusing if somebody came in and started talking about movies again. The guy wanting to talk about movies would have no idea what the heck is going on without reading through a bunch of posts. Second, if you have three people talking about movies, three people talking about baseball, and three people talking about music in the same topic, it would get really confusing...

Forums are designed to pick a topic to talk about, and stick to it. If you want to talk about something else, make a new topic.

"Hey guys, I saw this really neat baseball movie, you should check it out!"
"Speaking of baseball, did you catch the game last night?"
"Yea, it was great! Let's create a new topic to talk about it".

Bam. That's not so hard, is it?

Re: A Proposition

I think it's okay if threads go somewhat or fairly off-topic, but I think there should still be focus on the topic of a thread and also no threads created without a central topic. But discussion beyond a topic (esp. if somehow related, even if only tangentially).

Yea, this'll work. As long as it's not too hard to draw the lines between the two. Going from one wubject to a completely different one, should be unacceptable imo though.
