my plan is to upload a new demo every other day. i uploaded my first one yesterday (feb. 2), so if things go as planned, i'll have successfully written/recorded 14 songs in 28 days. currently working on tomorrow's demo, which is going to be a collab! wink

good luck to you! i'm gonna shoot for at least 10, which will be 6-7 more than i've ever done before in past years

I've written two songs, and collaborated on another song, which brings me up to three songs!

Already recorded and uploaded two demos, and someone added me as a collaborator to one of their songs lol.

#7 Re: Miscellaneous » Your opinion on Scratch 1.4 vs 2.0 » 2015-02-02 01:16:51

The one thing I don't like about 2.0 is that there's not many instruments and fonts.

One thing I like about this idea is that anyone can manufacture parts for the phone.

I would. Actually.

There are good things and bad things about Android.

#13 Re: Miscellaneous » Dreams? » 2015-01-29 23:00:59

I'm pretty sure it was a real lucid dream. Also, it's common for people to think that they only dreamed about lucidity, but in truth that's not actually possible. A lucid dream is one where you know that you're dreaming. Being able to control the dream comes with practice.

#15 Re: Miscellaneous » Dreams? » 2015-01-26 01:56:19

I had a lucid dream this morning. I woke up about three times before I woke up properly. Inception!

You need to pay like $150 a year to get it on iTunes.

Apple are the ones who let you install Windows on a Mac but prevent you from installing OS X on non-Mac computers, so they can market that as an advantage.

They don't actively prevent you, but they don't support it either. So basically, you can do it if you want, but don't come crying to Apple if it stops working. Quite a fair stance imho.

of course, then you have to deal with Apple and Apple are Not Nice

I'd rather deal with Apple then 99% other companies. They have the highest customer satisfaction rating after all, and are well known for their awesome after-sales support.

I think that elfin is interested in OSX, at least that's what Slaymaker seems to think?

I want OS X for Logic Pro, Garage band, and the sorts, but I want Windows for playing games and what-not. I guess I can't get both. Right now, I'm now leaning more towards the Mac though. Almost the same specs as the Lenovo, and *should* be able to play a few games. Plus, buying it through Apple's education store, I can save 300 dollars...

You CAN run both, just use bootcamp on the Mac.

It's officially supported, very easy, and fully functional. In fact, my Mac runs Windows better than most PCs can.

Additionally, some people seem to think that it's some sort of emulation or virtual machine that slows down the computer. No it isn't, you're running Windows natively, full speed.

The reason why I don't understand the advantage of a modular phone, at least for now, is that you can buy a phone with the fastest processor, fastest graphics, and best screen for not a lot of money (at least compared to computers). Why compromise?

It is much easier to swap out parts on a modular when one module breaks or if you want to upgrade it. With a normal, non-modular phone, it becomes outdated quickly and you can't upgrade the processor, battery, camera, etc.

Well that's exactly what I was talking about in my first post. It's unlikely that Google will make updated parts for their modular phone that will still fit in the old slots. Why?

AMD claimed that they would do something similar with their AMD CPUs, but now look, they're pretty much just making a new slot for every update now. Intel changes their socket every two generations of CPU. Maybe this is because of technical limitations of old sockets/chipsets, or maybe it's just to make people buy new motherboards.

So by the time a new component is released that is worth upgrading to (price vs performance increase), Google would probably make you buy a new ARA phone all over again, so what's the difference?

The only difference is that you get to choose which components the phone comes with when you first buy it.

Maybe I'm overthinking it too much and comparing it too much to building PCs?

I guess one advantage would be that you could replace broken components more easily.

The more I look into it, the more the Lenovo Y50 series looks like the way to go. Specifically THIS one. I just hope the build quality is up to par.

Wow those are some awesome specs. If you don't mind getting a windows laptop I guess this would be the way to go.

Comparison with 15" Retina Macbook Pro.

Same CPU speed.
Lenovo is slightly faster in GPU speed (around 25%)
Macbook has less storage, but the storage is faster.
Same RAM.
Macbook has better screen by far, more resolution and better quality.
Macbook also has better keyboard and trackpad by far.
Macbook has battery life that lasts twice as long, or more.
Macbook is lighter, slimmer.
Macbook can run both Mac and Windows, while the Lenovo can only run Windows.
Lenovo

For gaming the Lenovo wins, especially if you'll be using it mostly on a desk. But a laptop isn't like a desktop where performance is the only thing that matters. If you'll be carrying your laptop around for school or something, the Macbook will be much better.

You can get student discount on the Macbook too, or you can look through the refurbished models.

I'm sure you could find more than one way to run Mac on a Lenovo.

You must be referring to 'hackintoshing'.

I've done this myself on a few computers, and it won't work on the Lenovo of the GTX860M graphics, which aren't supported. It may work on the HP Envy though, but things like wifi and sound may not work, or may require patching.

If you want to learn more about hackintoshing, there's a few good websites.

tonymacx86 (good resource, but forums are very unfriendly)
insanelymac (cool, but a little unorganised)
/r/hackintosh (very friendly, a little short on specific info)

But most hackintoshing is centred around specially built desktops with parts selected for maximum compatibility. There isn't much support for laptops at all, and most people will just tell you to go buy a macbook because it's so hit and miss. Just check out many of the laptop threads on the subreddit if you want proof.

In short, it's a million times easier to run Windows on a Mac, than it is to run OSX on a PC.
